Welcome to the Carpathian Wetland Initiative

The Carpathian Wetland Initiative (CWI) is a Regional Initiative under the Ramsar Convention. Its mission is to strengthen cooperation across countries in the Carpathian region and to support the effective conservation and wise use of wetlands. Through shared knowledge, joint projects, and international partnerships, CWI helps protect these valuable ecosystems both in the Carpathians and across their wider catchment areas.

The Carpathians – A Unique Natural Treasure

The Carpathians form the largest mountain range in Europe outside the Alps. Stretching through seven countries, they are home to outstanding natural and ecological values. Their rivers, lakes, peatlands, and other wetlands host rare species, store water, and provide essential ecosystem services. The region is often described as the “water tower” of Central and Eastern Europe, supplying clean water far beyond mountain borders.

However, the Carpathians also face strong pressures. Rapid economic development, infrastructure expansion, tourism, and climate change create new challenges for local communities and nature conservation efforts. Balancing regional development with nature protection has therefore become more important than ever.

Wetlands Connected Across Borders

Waters from the Carpathians flow to both the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea, feeding four major river basins: the Danube, Dniester, Vistula, and Oder. These river systems support a remarkable variety of wetland ecosystems. Among them are:

  • Forested peatlands rich in carbon and specialized species
  • Mires and fens that regulate water and climate
  • Natural rivers and floodplains that store floodwaters and sustain wildlife
  • Mountain lakes and springs supplying fresh and clean water
  • Wet meadows providing habitat for butterflies, amphibians, and migratory birds

This ecological diversity makes the Carpathians a core area for biodiversity conservation in Europe.
